Take a deep breath. Now ask yourself — when’s the last time you actually noticed your breath?

For most people, breathing is automatic. It becomes background noise in a busy day. However, at True North Physical Therapy, we treat it as one of your most powerful tools for healing, strength, and nervous system balance.

Whether you're managing stress or recovering from pain, learning to breathe well changes everything. It’s the missing link between your mind, body, and how confidently you move through life.

The Importance of Breath in Healing

Breathing is not just about providing oxygen to our cells. It also impacts how our body stabilizes and supports itself. When you breathe deeply and intentionally, you activate the diaphragm. This essential muscle works in tandem with:

  • The pelvic floor

  • The transverse abdominis (your deep core)

  • The multifidus (spinal stabilizers)

This deep core system forms your body’s foundation. Without proper breathing mechanics, that foundation becomes shaky. This can lead to poor movement, tight muscles, and often, pain.

The Dangers of Shallow Breathing

Shallow breathing, which often results from stress, affects your well-being. When you breathe from your chest or shoulders, your body shifts into fight-or-flight mode. This can create:

  • Neck and shoulder tension

  • Poor posture

  • Core disconnection

  • Increased pain sensitivity

  • Reduced oxygen efficiency during workouts

It's important to note that this isn't just a stress response — it’s a significant movement and performance issue.

How Breathwork Enhances Strength and Reduces Pain

Restoring diaphragmatic breathing helps support your body’s parasympathetic nervous system (rest and repair mode). Benefits include:

  • Reduced muscle tension

  • Lower perceived pain

  • Improved blood flow and healing

  • Calmed nervous system after injury or overtraining

Bonus: Breathwork also improves sleep, energy, and mental clarity — all crucial parts of recovery.

Breathing with intention unlocks your deep core. This is the muscle group responsible for sustainable strength. Without connecting to it, you may often compensate using your back, hips, or neck.

Want to lift heavier, squat deeper, or run longer without pain? Start with your breath.

Try This: 60-Second Breath Reset

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Lie on your back with knees bent.

  2. Place one hand on your chest and one on your belly.

  3. Inhale through your nose for 4 counts — your belly should rise.

  4. Exhale slowly through pursed lips for 6–8 counts.

  5. Repeat for 5–10 breaths.

You just gave your nervous system a tune-up and activated your core. Imagine doing this before every workout and consistently utilizing breathwork to enhance strength and reduce pain.
