Ankle Pain That Won't Slow You Down
Your ankle rolled months ago and it still doesn't feel fully trustworthy. It aches along the bottom of your foot after a run. It feels unstable on uneven ground. And every clinic you've tried so far has told you the same thing: rest it, ice it, tape it up before you do anything active.
That's not a plan. That's a pause button — and you don't have to hit it.
At True North Physical Therapy, we don't just look at your ankle. We look at the whole chain — foot mechanics, calf strength, and hip control — to find out why your ankle is doing the complaining in the first place. Then we build a plan that lets you keep running, hiking, and training while it heals.
Why Your Ankle Pain Keeps Coming Back
A lot of times, ankle pain isn't a fully local problem, and it isn't just a fascia or ligament issue either — it's a load tolerance problem. What we find is that three structures are usually involved, and rest alone doesn't fix any of them:
● The small intrinsic muscles of the foot, which stabilize your arch and often go completely unaddressed
● The calf complex, which absorbs enormous load with every step, run, and jump — eccentric calf strength is the single most evidence-based intervention for lingering foot and ankle pain
● Hip mechanics — a hip that drops or doesn't control rotation well changes how force travels all the way down to your ankle and foot
Rest and orthotics can quiet symptoms for a while. They don't rebuild the calf and foot strength, or fix the hip mechanics, that actually keep the pain from returning. That's the missing link, and it's exactly what we build differently.
Common Reasons Patients Come to Us With Ankle Pain
● Chronic ankle instability or a sprain that never fully resolved
● Plantar fasciitis or pain along the bottom of the foot that keeps returning
● Achilles tendon pain or tightness, especially in runners
● Ankle pain that flares specifically with running, hiking, or uneven terrain
● Recurring “rolled” ankles during sport or on uneven ground
● Post-sprain or post-surgical ankles that need a real return-to-activity plan, not just a return-to-walking plan
No diagnosis required to start. If you're not sure what's going on, that's exactly what the assessment is for.
What Happens at Your First Visit
You'll get a full-chain movement assessment — not just an ankle poke-and-prod. We'll look at your gait, your calf and foot strength, your balance and stability, and how your hip controls the rest of the chain, then talk through what you've already tried and why it didn't stick. From there, we build a progressive loading plan — including the eccentric calf work that's the single best-supported fix for lingering foot and ankle pain — plus a modified way to keep training while it rebuilds.
No referral needed. No insurance runaround. Just a clear plan before you leave.
