Shoulder Pain That Won't Slow You Down

Your shoulder pinches on overhead press. It aches reaching for something on a high shelf. It wakes you up when you sleep on that side. And every clinic you've tried so far has told you the same thing: stop pressing overhead, avoid the aggravating motion, let it calm down.

That's not a plan. That's a pause button — and you don't have to hit it.

At True North Physical Therapy, we don't just look at your shoulder. We look at the whole chain — thoracic spine, scapula, and the way your shoulder blade actually moves — to find out why your shoulder is doing the complaining in the first place. Then we build a plan that lets you keep training, lifting, and working overhead while it heals.

Why Your Shoulder Pain Keeps Coming Back

The overhead press isn't the problem. In almost every case we see, one of two things is actually driving the pain — and neither of them is fixed by just avoiding the motion:
● A stiff thoracic spine (upper back) that can't extend enough to let your arm get fully overhead without your shoulder joint compensating
● Scapular instability — the muscles that control your shoulder blade aren't stabilizing it well enough to support the load you're asking your shoulder to move

Rest calms the pain down temporarily. It doesn't fix the thoracic mobility or scapular control that caused it — which is why the pain comes right back the moment you return to the same activity. That's the missing link, and it's exactly what we build differently.

Common Reasons Patients Come to Us With Shoulder Pain
● Pinching or pain with overhead press, push press, or snatch
● Rotator cuff irritation or tendinopathy from lifting or repetitive overhead work
● Pain reaching overhead, behind the back, or across the body
● Shoulder impingement-type symptoms with pressing or raising the arm
● Pain that disrupts sleep, especially lying on the affected side
● Post-injury or post-surgical shoulders (labrum, rotator cuff repair) needing a real return-to-training plan
● Nagging shoulder pain in swimmers, throwers, and CrossFit or gym athletes

No diagnosis required to start. If you're not sure what's going on, that's exactly what the assessment is for.

What Happens at Your First Visit

You'll get a full-chain movement assessment — not just a shoulder poke-and-prod. We'll look at your thoracic mobility, how your shoulder blade moves and stabilizes under load, and your actual overhead mechanics, then talk through what you've already tried and why it didn't stick. From there, we build a plan of care around your actual goals — most people are back to full overhead pressing within 6 to 8 weeks.

No referral needed. No insurance runaround. Just a clear plan before you leave.
