Jaw Pain That Won't Slow You Down
Your jaw clicks when you chew. It's tight and sore when you wake up. It aches by the end of a stressful day, or locks up slightly when you open wide. And every provider you've asked so far has told you the same thing: avoid hard foods, try a night guard, give it time.
That's not a plan. That's a pause button — and you don't have to hit it.
At True North Physical Therapy, we don't just look at your jaw. We look at the whole chain — neck, upper back, and posture — to find out why your jaw is doing the complaining in the first place. Then we build a plan that addresses the actual mechanics behind it, not just the symptoms.
Why Your Jaw Pain Keeps Coming Back
A lot of times, jaw pain (often called TMJ or TMD) doesn't start and end at the jaw. The jaw joint is closely linked to your neck and upper back — clenching patterns, forward-head posture, and neck tension all directly affect how your jaw sits and moves. A night guard can protect your teeth from grinding, but it doesn't address why the muscles around your jaw and neck are overworking in the first place.
What we find is that most previous approaches stopped at one of two places:
● Dental management only — a night guard or bite adjustment with no assessment of neck posture or muscle tension patterns feeding the problem
● Generic advice to “relax your jaw” or avoid hard foods, with nothing addressing the muscular and postural habits actually driving the clenching or clicking
That's the missing link. And it's exactly what we build differently.
Common Reasons Patients Come to Us With Jaw Pain
● Jaw clicking or popping with chewing, yawning, or talking
● Jaw tension or soreness that's worse first thing in the morning (often tied to nighttime clenching or grinding)
● Jaw pain that flares alongside neck tension, tension headaches, or ear fullness
● Difficulty opening the mouth fully, or a jaw that feels like it catches or deviates
● Stress-related clenching that's built up over months or years
● Jaw pain following dental work, an injury, or a period of high stress
No diagnosis required to start. If you're not sure what's going on, that's exactly what the assessment is for.
What Happens at Your First Visit
You'll get a full assessment of your jaw mechanics, neck mobility, and posture — not just a quick look inside your mouth. We'll look at how your jaw opens and tracks, how much tension is built up in your jaw and neck muscles, and what postural or stress-related habits might be feeding the problem. From there, we build a plan of care using hands-on manual therapy and targeted exercise to address what's actually driving your symptoms.
No referral needed. No insurance runaround. Just a clear plan before you leave.
