Tennis Elbow, Golfer's Elbow, and Why Rest Alone Won't Fix Either Cause of Elbow Pain

Tennis elbow. Golfer's elbow. Two of the most common labels in all of sports medicine — and two of the most misleading, because most people who get one of these diagnoses have never picked up a racquet or a golf club in their life.
Here's what those names are actually telling you: one describes pain on the outside of your elbow (lateral epicondylalgia), and the other describes pain on the inside (medial epicondylalgia). That's it. They're location labels, not explanations. And because they sound so specific, it's easy to assume the pain is simple to fix — brace it, rest it, wait it out. For a lot of people, that approach never quite works.
What's Actually Happening: A Tendon Overload Problem
Both conditions come down to the same underlying issue: the tendons attaching your forearm muscles to your elbow have been asked to handle more load, more repetitively, than they're currently conditioned to tolerate. That's it. It's not inflammation from a single bad rep, and it's usually not something that “just happens” out of nowhere — it's a gradual mismatch between load and capacity.
That distinction matters enormously for how you treat it, because inflammation responds to rest. A capacity problem does not.
Why Bracing and Rest Only Go So Far with Elbow Pain
A brace can reduce the load on the tendon in the short term, which can genuinely help with day-to-day discomfort. Rest can calm an acutely irritated tendon down. But neither one rebuilds the tendon's actual capacity to handle load. So when you take the brace off and go back to deadlifting, gripping, or the repetitive motion at work that triggered this in the first place, the tendon is right back where it started — still under-conditioned for the demand you're placing on it.
This is exactly why so many people cycle through months of on-and-off elbow pain: rest, feel better, go back to normal activity, pain returns, rest again.
● Pain on the outside of the elbow with gripping, typing, or lifting (lateral)
● Pain on the inside of the elbow with lifting, throwing, or wrist flexion (medial)
● Pain that improves with rest but consistently returns at the same activity level
● A sense that the elbow “never fully feels normal” even on good days
Modify, don't stop.
What Actually Rebuilds Tendon Capacity
Tendons respond to progressive loading — controlled, gradually increasing stress that teaches the tissue to tolerate more over time. This is the same principle that makes your muscles stronger, applied to a different tissue type that just happens to adapt more slowly. Alongside that, it's worth checking what's happening upstream: grip mechanics, wrist positioning, and even shoulder mechanics can all change how much load your elbow ends up absorbing during a lift or a repetitive task.
None of this requires you to stop lifting, gripping, or working. It requires loading the tendon in a way that rebuilds it instead of just avoiding the thing that hurts.

If you've already tried rest, ice, and a brace and the elbow pain keeps coming back the moment you return to normal activity, that's a strong sign the tendon's actual capacity was never rebuilt — which means more rest isn't likely to be the answer this time either.
